If you use water-based chalk paint, then wash the stencil and the brush very quickly with detergent and lukewarm water. I put them in a bowl of water immediately after use so the paint doesn't even dry. Then I wash off the stencil with a soft sponge and a small hand washing brush.
Never clean with chemical cleaning agents, in water that is too hot or put in the dishwasher. Then you destroy them.
Another tip. You can use stencil spray to glue them to the project. Then it fits particularly well and does not slip when painting. I attach large templates with masking tape.
